“You Are Here”
If we want to grow, we need to know ourselves. We need to have those indicators of our past and our present. Strengths, weaknesses, achievements, dreams, desires, fears, boundaries.
We must know where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. The starting point is where we’re at right now. It’s like a map in which we can clearly see the sign that says, “You are here”. Once we know where we are, and accept it, we can begin to move forward.
So, where are you starting from? Can you accept that’s where you are?
According to John C. Maxwell there are only 3 kinds of people when it comes to finding and having direction in life:
One: People who don’t know what they would like to do.
This group of people are usually confused. They tend to be lost or drifting and may not be aware of it. They go from one thing to another, dabbling into this and that, starting but not finishing, and unable to commit to anything for too long. For these types of people, very few things add up to anything substantial.
They lack a strong sense of purpose and direction for their lives. If they are growing, they are unfocused about it. Unfortunately, they can’t reach their potential because they have no idea what they’re aiming for.
Two: People who know what they would like to do but don’t do it.
This group of people are usually frustrated. They are aware of the real and tangible gap between where they are and where they want to be.
They see many factors getting in the way of achieving their potential. These could include anything from family responsibilities, finances, time, to overall health circumstances.
Frequently, they’re just not willing to sacrifice and pay the price in moving closer to their preferred future. They find ways to validate their excuses.
Sometimes it’s fear that keeps them from acting on their future hopes and dreams. It prevents them from changing course to pursue their passion. No matter what the reason, they to miss their potential.
Three: People who know what they would like to do and do it.
The word that best describes this group of people is fulfilled. They know themselves, possess a strong sense of passion, are focused and grow in areas that help them move closer to their purpose, and do what they were created to do.
They know the price to moving in the direction of their vision, and they pay it.
So, which of the three groups do you fall into?
I really believe that one of our greatest quests in life, is to find ourselves amid so many voices. It’s about igniting our imagination and finding our vision, that for which we are destined for.
Learning to know oneself is not easy. It demands absolute honesty and most of us don’t do well with this. We need someone to help us see our blind spots, excuses, and hold us accountable. We need coaches and mentors that don’t let us off the hook too quickly, as we do with ourselves.
