Three Key Tips In Times Of Crisis

Here are a few of my thoughts of 3 skills that we can learn and practice regularly so that in times of crisis we know what to do:

You don’t have to rush despite the urgency

This is not a matter of sink or swim. Yes, these are urgent times and we have to decide we want to survive it; but, we can't be jumping in the water too soon and splashing about hoping to learn how to make it to shore. Sometimes we need to sit back and watch what's happening in our midst. Call for wisdom. Learn the strokes that will take you to shore. Although, you may not have jumped in the water as quickly as others and it might have taken you a little longer to get to shore, once you get there you won't be exhausted and you will have learned the difference between reaction and response. Being observant and taking your time before committing to action can actual save you.

Know there are several ways to solving a problem

Learn to improvise and to step out of the set plan. And, don't try too hard to find a solution. I've been there. What I have found, is that when we are too focused on problem-solving, we often end up becoming too intense and we can over think. We find our best solutions when we are in a space of relaxation. Likewise, before taking a step forward towards execution, step aside for a moment, become completely relaxed, trust the process you will take, and surrender to the outcome.

Learn to be aware of reactions.

Remember that crisis is part of life and the best time to learn how to respond to crisis is when we're not in it. What I mean is that how we respond to crisis usually comes from the practice we've had in responding to many situations outside of crisis. So, be very aware of how you respond or react to any situation. Reaction is usually filled with emotion. Intentional learning is key. And, if you don't like the way you are handling something, change it. You're the only one that can do that.
