Leadership is Courage: The Courage to Empathize
I often find myself wondering: “What does being a leader require?” After taking time to reflect on this, I realized that all of the responsibilities of leadership such as: inspiring teams, driving innovation, and making tough decisions require one crucial trait: empathy. Sure, leadership is about guiding others, but it's also about knowing our teams, our people, our clients. This is where the real courage of leadership shines – the courage to empathize.
"People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." – Maya Angelou
Read that again! Sometimes, as leaders, it's easy to get caught up in metrics and outcomes, but that’s not all of what leadership is about. It's about creating lasting, meaningful connections where we influence others. When we lead with empathy, we foster a sense of trust and belonging that goes beyond mere tasks and targets. Our teams will remember the moments when we listened to them, understood their struggles, and showed genuine care. Empathy isn't just a leadership tool; it's the heart of impactful and enduring leadership.
Tips I Use to Be an Empathetic Leader:
Listen Actively: Give your full attention, avoid interrupting, and show that you are truly listening through eye contact and reflecting back what’s being said.
Show Genuine Concern: Understand the personal and professional challenges your team faces. Ask about their well-being and offer support where you can.
Practice Self-Reflection: Reflect on your own emotions and biases to connect more deeply with others and respond with greater empathy.
Remember, as empathetic leaders, we can create positive, inclusive, and flexible work environments. This benefits our teams and our businesses because our people will have higher job satisfaction, increased loyalty, and ultimately improved performance. We all win when we exercise the courage of empathy.
