The Unexamined Life

Socrates once wrote, “The unexamined life, is not worth living.” This statement seems harsh, and perhaps it’s because for a very long period of time, I lived like that. Although I’ve always been introspective, I don’t believe I went as far into my self-examination as I needed to. I didn’t push myself beyond my comfort zone. Maybe I didn’t want to make the necessary changes.

Have you done the same?

I think we’d all agree that examining and assessing our life can lead to better results and therefore, a more fulfilling life. Why is it then that so many of us delay, ignore, or simply don’t make the effort to do this on a more regular basis? Here are a few reasons that I’ve explored:

·      Fear of Facing Our Flaws: Self-reflection often requires us to confront our weaknesses, mistakes, and flaws. It can be uncomfortable and even painful to admit that we have areas in which we need to improve.

·      Lack of Time: Many of us lead busy lives, leaving little time for introspection. It can be difficult to find the time to sit down and reflect on ourselves.

·      Lack of Awareness: Sometimes, we may not be aware of our own thought patterns, emotions, or behavior. Without this awareness, it can be challenging to reflect on ourselves.

·      Emotional Barriers: Emotions such as shame, guilt, or anxiety can make it difficult to self-reflect. We may feel overwhelmed or ashamed of what we discover, leading us to avoid the process altogether.

·      Resistance to Change: Sometimes, we resist self-reflection because it may require us to make changes in our lives. Change can be difficult and uncomfortable, leading us to avoid reflecting on ourselves.

What keeps you from taking inventory of your life? Which of these resonates with you? Is there another reason that keeps you from self-reflection?

Sometimes, it could be that we just don’t know where to start. Here are a few questions to help you get started:

1.     What are my values and beliefs? How do they influence my decisions and actions?

2.     What are my strengths and weaknesses? How can I build on my strengths and address my weaknesses?

3.     What are my goals? Are they aligned with my values and beliefs? What steps can I take to achieve them?

4.     How do I handle stress? What coping strategies do I use, and are they effective?

5.     How do I communicate with others? Am I an effective communicator? Are there areas where I need to improve?

6.     How do I handle conflict? Do I avoid it or confront it? How can I learn to handle conflict more effectively?

7.     What is my attitude toward failure? How can I develop a growth mindset and learn from my mistakes?

8.     How do I take care of myself? Am I getting enough sleep, exercise, and self-care?

9.     How do I spend my time? Am I prioritizing activities that align with my values and goals?

10.  How do I contribute to the world around me? What can I do to make a positive impact on others?

Happy self-reflection!
